I am aware that all the old links toward file are broken: Blogger only store the pictures, so I should find a way to store the files. I think google drive seems a solution that deserve to be tried. Milady 4.05b

Finally, I'm back in computer chess with a new version of Milady, 4.05b . In this version, evaluation is simple and rewritten from scratch. It takes into account material, material imbalance, king attack, passed pawn, control of cases, control of centre, development, double pawns,.. Most of all, the evaluation is smoothly normalized such that there are no jump in the evaluation. I completely removed all the cut-off based on Alpha or on Beta that were in the evaluation before. In addition, the analysis feature is improved and it can follows move input during move analysis. Framework 4 required to work.

This version reached 2270 against my Novag Star Diamond (rated 2150 international ELO). All the games can be find here. These are examples of position reached during this match :

Note that in engine tournament, the strength will be lower since there are some program crash due to GUI command missing: I should investigate on that...

Milady_3.25 - Fidelity Phantom (19-1)

Game over! Milady won by a large score. I wonder why the score is so high, that is not normal. The same phenomena arose against the Mephisto Expert. The score leads to a rating of 2346. All the games are available here.So that maybe there is a phenomena, when a engine is tactically much stronger than an other, the stronger engine will win anyway? I have not the answer but I have seen this hypothesis on SchachComputer.info. To be clarified...

End of the match Phantom - Mephisto MMII : 13 - 7

I will update the page both of Phantom and MM II (double work :P ) . The Phantom won 13-7, giving a performance of 1877 +- 72, that is consistent with its ranking of 1835. Performance of MM II is of 1727+- 72.

During the match, I had the feeling that the Phantom was stronger than MM II. Some of the games were very pleasant, as can be seen below (game 17). Some of the games were just a succession of blunders from both sides. An other interesting position is this one :

Merry Christmas to all !!! The Phantom is here!!!

The Fidelity Phantom is arrived for Christmas! A beautiful machine, which was very attractive for my family. I tested it against the Mephisto MMII: the Phantom loosed this first game, it had an edge on the opening, but, the pressure of the Mephisto pushed the Phantom to a tactical loss (a bishop vs a rook). Milady 3.25 - Novag Star Diamond: 8.5-11.5

The tournament is finished: it was a great battle! Some games are beautiful in tactical play. Some games are breathtaking, with so many incidents. One side thinks it is winning, but some moves later, it is loosing. With this games I hope to have spoted some weakness of my programme. Here is the final table;

The games are in the dedicated computer section (on the Novag Star Diamond page) This tournament confirms that Milady is around 2100 (see elo above, on the right most side). It means also that there is something wrong in the absolute values displayed in the tournament between engines: the relative value between engines is good I suppose, but the real strength is wrong. The real strength beeing the strength in the human scale; and the human scale being indicated by the scale of dedicted computers.

New York Times Chess Deluxe Edition

After 10 games against MM II, I can say that the level of this machine (i.e. the New York Times Deluxe Edition) is more around 1468 elo. We are far from the 2000 USCF (1800 FIDE) announced by the manufacturer. Look in the Dedicated Computer Chess, in the New Yor Times Chess Deluxe Edition section if you want to download the games.

Milady won the game with a little bit of chance. In the opening, the Star Diamond has an edge, with a possibility of King attack. But the pressure vanished; The Star Diamond has a positional advantage, up to a very bad move (24...c5?) played very quickly (pondering bug?).

A comparison of Milady performances

The last version of my chess programme obtained the following results:

You can see a comparison against older versions. There is an obvious improvement of 150 to 200 elo points against the 2.72d version, on tactical tests. The results against Star Diamond are now finished; I think the Star Diamond is more stable in the evaluation (though it is often outperformed by Milady from a tactical point of view; there are some epic games I will post here). The games are very long (1h for each opponent at least...) so it takes time to test ;). I will add the games in the correspondant dedicated computer sections (i.e. games of Milady 3.25 against MM II in the MM II section, ...).
