Phantom 6 - 4 Mephisto MM II

Game 10th finished with a tie, in a drawish bishop/knight ending. So that the score is now 6-4 for the Phantom. Forgot to mentioned the level is 1 min/move. See the pictures of this game below.

Note that this performance corresponds to 1765 for the MM II and 1840 for the Phantom which is near the perfect theorical score!

Merry Christmas to all !!! The Phantom is here!!!

The Fidelity Phantom is arrived for Christmas! A beautiful machine, which was very attractive for my family. I tested it against the Mephisto MMII: the Phantom loosed this first game, it had an edge on the opening, but, the pressure of the Mephisto pushed the Phantom to a tactical loss (a bishop vs a rook). The Phantom loosed in the ending. Here is the game:

Milady 3.25 - Novag Star Diamond: 8.5-11.5

The tournament is finished: it was a great battle! Some games are beautiful in tactical play. Some games are breathtaking, with so many incidents. One side thinks it is winning, but some moves later, it is loosing. With this games I hope to have spoted some weakness of my programme. Here is the final table;

Total games 20,00 Mean rating 2125,00 Error Barre (%) 8,94
Score Rating Perf (%) Rating opponents Perf (elo) Error Bar (Elo) Elo
Milady 3.25 8,50 2100 42,50 2150,00 2090 71,55 2097
Novag Star Diamond 11,50 2150 57,50 2100,00 2160 71,55 2153

The games are in the dedicated computer section (on the Novag Star Diamond page) This tournament confirms that Milady is around 2100 (see elo above, on the right most side). It means also that there is something wrong in the absolute values displayed in the tournament between engines: the relative value between engines is good I suppose, but the real strength is wrong. The real strength beeing the strength in the human scale; and the human scale being indicated by the scale of dedicted computers.

New York Times Chess Deluxe Edition

After 10 games against MM II, I can say that the level of this machine (i.e. the New York Times Deluxe Edition) is more around 1468 elo. We are far from the 2000 USCF (1800 FIDE) announced by the manufacturer. Look in the Dedicated Computer Chess, in the New Yor Times Chess Deluxe Edition section if you want to download the games.

game n°13 Milady 3.25-Novag Star Diamond

Milady won the game with a little bit of chance. In the opening, the Star Diamond has an edge, with a possibility of King attack. But the pressure vanished; The Star Diamond has a positional advantage, up to a very bad move (24...c5?) played very quickly (pondering bug?).

Improvement of the MM II dedicated computer page

As said in the title. Follow the link for the MM II  in dedicated computer page.

A comparison of Milady performances

The last version of my chess programme obtained the following results:

Test Version
  2.72d 2.95 2.99 3.00 3.04 3.05 3.10 3.15 3.20 3.25

LCTII 2065         2245   2220 2275 2225
BT2450 2100 2172 2232 2233 2216 2252 2224 2207 2201 2241
CC2175 2169 2350 2350 2350           2367
Perf against Mephisto MM II                   2108
Perf against Mephisto Expert Travel Chess                   2466
Perf against Novag Star Diamond                   2097

You can see a comparison against older versions. There is an obvious improvement of 150 to 200 elo points against the 2.72d version, on tactical tests. The results against Star Diamond are now finished; I think the Star Diamond is more stable in the evaluation (though it is often outperformed by Milady from a tactical point of view; there are some epic games I will post here). The games are very long (1h for each opponent at least...) so it takes time to test ;). I will add the games in the correspondant dedicated computer sections (i.e. games of Milady 3.25 against MM II in the MM II section, ...).

A new section : Dedicated computers...

In this section you will find some informations, pictures, stories, and memorable games, concerning my chess computers. Enjoy!

Some news in Tournaments...

Look inside the section. You will find some games between Mephisto MM II et Mephisto Expert Travel Chess. These games tend to confirm their rating. The Elo of MM II is around 1770, the elo of Expert Travel Chess is 2030. Have fun !

Milady 3.25

Recently I made some new versions of Milady. I'm not able to say if they are stronger than the previous ones. It seems to me that there are some tactical weakness, especially for long forced lines. I will published soon this new version of Milady. Also, I guess what is the reference of elo rating, and I'm doing some tests against reference dedicated computers which have been tested against humans, to have a good comparison point. I will publish the results soon. It seems that the tactical tests tends to overestimate the strength of my programme.

Milady 3.04

This new version behaves better at tactical and positional tests suites (BT2630, CC2175, Positional Tony, Positional Ed). It beats my Mephisto MMII very easily. No idea if it performs better in real tests.
Requires Framework 4 to work

Version 2.95 available

Hi! Look in the download section. This version requires Framework 4 to work. The changes are : move ordering in Quiescence, cutting in Quiescence in some cases, and cleaning in the procedures (especially no array definition in the move generators, now the arrays are passed byval, as it is possible to change a value inside the subroutine). There is also something modified in the King's security routine; a bonus when the pawn chains are destroyed. The Nodes per seconds are thus largely increased! The programme made 2172 elo at BT2450 and 2319 at CC2175. Is it stronger than before? I don't know, please test it and let me know if you find bugs ;)
